Career Exploration Day:
Job Shadowing Program for Students with Disabilities
Career Exploration Day is a half-day job shadowing program for high school students with disabilities. Local government and business employees serve as mentors for young people who have expressed interest in specific types of work. Priority is given to students in their final year of school.
Program Goals
· Exposing students to government and business environments to increase knowledge about potential opportunities
· Providing students opportunities to observe employees during a typical work day
· Providing students opportunities to complete work tasks typical to their assigned work sites
· Providing students opportunities to reflect upon the shadowing experience and connect observations to vocational goals
· Increasing knowledge of disability issues and methods for accommodating people with disabilities in the workplace (e.g. Braille, modified work space, etc.) creating a welcoming environment for future colleagues with disabilities
This is a joint project of the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS), The Columbia Workforce Center: Office of Workforce Development, Howard County Department of Citizen Services and theMaryland Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS).
